Parishes have a responsibility to manage the risks associated with everyday church activities, helping to ensure that everyone is kept safe — particularly children and vulnerable adults.
The Church of England’s Safer Environment and Activities guidance makes clear that first aid provision and training are an important part of risk management within church settings. Further health and safety guidance, including policy templates, is also available from Ecclesiastical Insurance, which is widely used across parishes and covers both first aid and fire safety responsibilities.
Nationally, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises organisations to assess risks carefully and ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to respond to accidents or medical emergencies.
As good practice, it is recommended that at least one leader involved in activities for children or vulnerable adults holds a recognised first aid qualification, and that a first aid kit is readily available on church premises and for group outings.
Alongside first aid provision, fire safety is an essential part of keeping church buildings and activities safe. Parishes should ensure that fire risks are assessed, escape routes are clearly marked and kept clear, and that those leading activities understand basic fire procedures, including evacuation plans and the use of fire safety equipment. Regular checks and clear communication help ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
A number of organisations offer one‑day, in‑person first aid training courses as well as fire safety and fire marshal training, including options delivered at your premises. Costs typically range from around £40–£170 per person, depending on provider and group size. Examples include:
-
British Red Cross – First aid training is available at a wide range of venues or can be delivered on your premises for group bookings. The charity also offers fire marshal training.
-
First at Scene Training – Church‑based training delivered on site by a former Metropolitan Police Officer. Training available includes emergency first aid training and a course on fire safety awareness.
-
St John Ambulance – First aid and fire marshal courses are offered at designated training venues or can be arranged at your premises for group bookings.
Parishes are encouraged to explore these options and consider how first aid training can support safer activities and confident leadership within their church community.
