Clergy to gather for conference on fresh approaches to mission

Every three years, clergy from across the Diocese of Guildford gather for a three-day conference.

Rooted and Reaching: Church for a Changing World, focuses on equipping clergy to enable a mixed ecology of worshipping communities to reach every member of the communities we serve with the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ. The Conference will take place from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 May at The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire.

Held just two months after the death of Bishop Andrew, the conference will provide space for clergy to be together, giving thanks for his life, ministry and leadership. Stepping into the sessions originally planned to be led by Bishop Andrew will be his close friend, the Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield, who spoke at his funeral.

The programme will include contributions from the Rt Revd Rhiannon King, Bishop of Southampton, who will lead thinking and conversation on mixed ecology approaches to missional communities, rooted in Jesus Christ and reaching into today’s varied contexts. Dr Rob Barward-Symmons from Bible Society will explore current insights into the Quiet Revival, particularly in relation to younger adults.

Clergy wellbeing will also be a key focus. On Wednesday afternoon, Dr Liz Graveling from the National Church and Revd Ben Cahill-Nicholls, CEO of the Clergy Support Trust, will lead a session reflecting on wellbeing in ministry. On the final morning, prior to the closing communion service, the Revd Dr Israel Oluwole Olofinjana will share some insights on intercultural mission. Comedian Paul Kerensa will join the conference again as the after-dinner speaker and quiz master.

Alongside teaching sessions, the conference will include worship in a variety of styles, time for sports and leisure, and opportunities for prayer with conference chaplains Bishop Peter Hancock and Bishop Olivia Graham.
